Clean Air And Your Stove

Let’s Talk About Clean Air and Your Stove!

So, you might have heard whispers about the government’s Clean Air Strategy, and we totally get if you’re wondering what it means for your cozy wood-burning stove in Worthing or across Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, and South London.

So, let’s clear things up right away: the good news is, the government is absolutely not looking to ban wood-burning stoves! Phew! Instead, the main aim of the Clean Air Strategy (which Defra published back in 2019) is all about making sure we all use the most efficient and least polluting stoves and, crucially, the cleanest fuel possible. (Keywords: Clean Air Strategy, wood-burning stove, Worthing, Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, South London, Defra, efficient stoves, cleanest fuel)

It’s All About Smarter, Cleaner Burning! ✨

The Clean Air Strategy smartly recognises that not all wood burning is created equal. They’ve highlighted that we can make a real difference in cutting down on tiny particles (what they call particulate emissions or PM) by doing two key things:

  1. Installing modern Ecodesign stoves. These are the clever, super-efficient models designed to burn much cleaner, and are the standard for all new stove installations since 2022.

  2. Burning “Ready to Burn” logs – that’s wood with a moisture content of less than 20%. Remember, dry wood is happy wood, and it’s also the official recommended firewood for your stove!

Your Role in Cleaner Air (and a Better Burn!) 💪

The government also knows that how you look after and use your stove plays a big part in reducing emissions. Things like:

  • Regular stove maintenance (like checking those seals and vents).

  • Annual chimney sweeping by a certified professional (like us!).

  • And even just how you operate your stove on a daily basis.

These all contribute significantly to a cleaner burn and fewer emissions.

Defra is actually working really closely with the stove industry (that’s us!) to help educate everyone on how to burn the right fuel in the right appliance. It’s all about enjoying your log burner responsibly and contributing to cleaner air in your local area. So, you can relax, keep enjoying that warmth, and know you’re doing your bit!
