The Brief

Hannah and Lou came to Surrey and Sussex Stoves with a clear vision. They’d found a finished project online that captured exactly the look they wanted — a beautiful exposed brick surround, custom built to frame a classic wood burning stove, with a natural stone hearth to complete the picture.

This wasn’t an off-the-shelf installation. They wanted something bespoke, built from scratch to match their vision precisely. The existing fireplace was crumbling and dated — the perfect blank canvas for something special.

The Work

Step 1 — Stripping Back the Existing Fireplace

The original fireplace was in a poor state — crumbling brickwork, a tired opening and a surround that had seen better days. We stripped it all back to expose the chimney breast beneath, giving us the foundation to build something beautiful.

Step 2 — Structural Fireplace Opening

The existing opening was rebuilt and restructured to the correct proportions for the ECOSY+ Hampton XL stove and the bespoke surround. Getting the structural work right at this stage is critical — everything that follows depends on it.

Step 3 — Bespoke Brick Surround Construction

This is where the project really came to life. We hand built a brand new brick surround to match the finished look Hannah and Lou had brought to us. Every brick was carefully laid to achieve the rustic, characterful aesthetic they were after — warm tones, natural texture and a look that feels like it’s always been part of the home.

Step 4 — Chimney Lining

A new flexible flue liner was installed, correctly sized for the ECOSY+ Hampton XL and fully compliant with Building Regulations. This ensures safe, efficient performance for years to come.

Step 5 — Sandstone Hearth Installation

A beautiful sandstone hearth was laid to complement the warm tones of the brick surround. The natural variation in the sandstone adds to the organic, handcrafted feel of the whole installation — it works perfectly with the brickwork and the stove.

Step 6 — ECOSY+ Hampton XL Installation

The ECOSY+ Hampton XL wood burning stove was installed, connected to the new liner and commissioned. This is a generously sized, high efficiency stove with a large glass door that gives a stunning view of the fire — and it looks absolutely at home nestled into that bespoke brick surround.

Step 7 — HETAS Sign-Off

As HETAS registered installers, we issued a full Certificate of Compliance on completion — giving Hannah and Lou complete peace of mind and keeping their home insurance valid.

The Result

The finished installation is exactly what Hannah and Lou had envisioned — and then some. The combination of the hand built brick surround, sandstone hearth and ECOSY+ Hampton XL is a stunning focal point that gives the room real warmth, character and personality.

This is one of our favourite installs of the season. Proof that when a customer has a strong vision and trusts you to bring it to life, the results can be exceptional.
