How much does it really cost to run a wood burner?

This depends on how much you use it. For cosy average evening fires throughout the winter, you'll likely go through about 2 cubic metres of good quality, seasoned hardwood, which currently costs around £160 to £300 depending on where you source it from. Many customers find that heating their main living space with a wood burner can be surprisingly cost-effective compared to gas heating, especially with today's energy prices.

Will a wood burner really make my room warmer than my open fire?

Yes. Open fires are usually only about 10 to 25 percent efficient, meaning 80 percent or more of the heat produced disappears straight up the chimney. Wood burners are far more efficient, with modern stoves having a minimum net efficiency of 66.6 percent, and some reaching as high as 91 percent, pushing much more heat out into your room.

A professionally installed wood-burning stove is actually much safer than an open fire.

Multi-fuel vs wood only stoves, what's the difference?

Wood-only stoves are designed specifically for burning wood logs and use a flat firebrick base, often giving higher efficiency when burning wood. Multi-fuel stoves have a cast iron grate with an ashpan underneath, allowing air to circulate beneath the fuel so they can also safely burn smokeless coal, anthracite and approved peat or turf briquettes, and are generally easier to clean out.

Are wood burners going to be banned?

No, wood burners are not being banned. Since 2022 all new stoves bought and installed must meet Ecodesign standards, which are significantly more efficient and produce far fewer emissions than older models. House coal has been phased out in favour of cleaner burning smokeless coal, and burning wet or green wood has long been illegal. These changes promote cleaner, more efficient burning rather than restricting wood burner ownership.
