Wood-only stoves are designed specifically for burning wood logs and use a flat firebrick base, often giving higher efficiency when burning wood. Multi-fuel stoves have a cast iron grate with an ashpan underneath, allowing air to circulate beneath the fuel so they can also safely burn smokeless coal, anthracite and approved peat or turf briquettes, and are generally easier to clean out.

Since 2022 all new stoves bought and installed must meet Ecodesign standards, which are significantly more efficient and produce far fewer emissions than older models. House coal has been phased out in favour of cleaner burning smokeless coal, and burning wet or green wood has long been illegal. These changes promote cleaner, more efficient burning rather than restricting wood burner ownership.
