The Brief

When Joel got in touch with Surrey and Sussex Stoves, he had a living room dominated by a large, dated brick fireplace surround that was eating into his space and had seen better days. The old gas fire inside was inefficient and the whole unit felt heavy and tired.

Joel wanted something completely different — clean, minimal and modern. A sleek wood burning stove set into a smooth plastered chimney breast with a simple slate hearth. The kind of transformation that opens up a room and makes it feel twice the size.

We knew exactly what he was after. This is one of our favourite types of project.

The Work

Step 1 — Removal of the old fireplace surround The first job was removing the existing brick surround entirely. It was a substantial unit and the room looked dramatically different once it came out — suddenly there was so much more space.

Step 2 — Chimney breast preparation With the surround gone, we stripped back the chimney breast to bare brick and assessed the existing chimney. The flue was in good condition and suitable for a wood burning stove installation with a new liner.

Step 3 — Chimney lining We installed a new flexible flue liner to ensure the chimney met current Building Regulations requirements and was sized correctly for the ECOSY+ Panoramic Wide 5KW stove.

Step 4 — Replastering The chimney breast was fully replastered to create the clean, smooth finish Joel was after. This is the feature that really defines the final look — a tall, uninterrupted plastered chimney breast is a stunning backdrop for a modern stove.

Step 5 — Slate hearth installation A sleek slate hearth was installed to complement the minimalist aesthetic and meet the required hearth dimensions for the stove.

Step 6 — Stove installation The ECOSY+ Panoramic Wide 5KW wood burning stove was installed, connected to the new liner and commissioned. This is a fantastic stove — the wide panoramic glass gives an incredible view of the fire and the 5KW output is perfect for a living room this size.

Step 7 — HETAS sign-off As HETAS registered installers, we issued a full Certificate of Compliance on completion — essential for Joel’s home insurance and peace of mind.

The Result

The transformation speaks for itself. What was once a heavy, room-dominating brick surround is now a clean, contemporary focal point that makes the whole room feel bigger, brighter and more modern.
